Arnold Urges CA Schools Reform for Federal Funds

SACRAMENTO (AP) - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is urging state lawmakers to get serious about education reforms California must make to compete for a one-time pot of federal money.

At stake is a share of the $4.3 billion the Obama administration is making available through its Race to the Top contest.

The governor said Tuesday that legislation the Assembly is scheduled to consider fails to go far enough and will hurt the state's chances to compete for the money.

The administration will award the money to states with the strongest plans to turn around failing schools.

In California, the Senate passed a robust reform package last month, but Schwarzenegger says the Assembly bill is more about politics than fixing schools.
