Man Gets Death Penalty for Murder of Off-Duty Deputy

LONG BEACH  -  A judge has sentenced a man to death for the murder of an off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy during an attempted robbery.

Judge Joan Comparet-Cassani imposed the sentence Monday on 27-year-old Frank Gonzales.

Deputy Maria Rosa was shot as she was heading to work from Long Beach in 2006.

Gonzales was convicted last month of first-degree murder, attempted robbery and the special circumstance of murder during an attempted robbery.

Another man convicted of taking part in the crime was sentenced previously to 29 years to life in prison.
