Shootout Followed Report of Shots Fired at Nearby Casino

SAN JACINTO, Calif.  -  An hour-long gun battle on an Indian reservation ended when Riverside County sheriff's deputies shot and killed two people who had fired at them with automatic weapons.

Deputies responded Monday evening to a report of shots being fired at a security kiosk less than a quarter-mile from the Soboba Casino, authorities said.

A man and woman attacked the deputies using assault rifles, then drove off into the hills on the reservation, Sgt. Dean Spivacke said.

The suspects exchanged gunfire with the deputies pursuing them and shot at a sheriff's helicopter that was following them.

The suspects' vehicle broke down, and SWAT officers confronted them. More shooting ensued and both suspects were killed, Spivacke said.

No one else was injured.

On Tuesday morning, authorities still had not released the identities of the dead suspects.

Late Monday, tribal chairman Robert Salgado warned tribal residents to stay inside.

``They've got the SWAT team out here,'' Salgado said. ``They're probably going to shoot first and ask questions later.''

It was the second fatal shooting by deputies on the reservation in less than a week. On Thursday, deputies killed 26-year-old tribal member Eli Morillo after he began shooting at them with an assault rifle.
